Nikola Power acknowledges that our mission of creating a 100% renewable energy-powered world can’t be done alone—positive changes must be made collectively. We impact and serve not only our shareholders but also our community and our planet. There’s no movement that better embodies this belief than the B Corp’s growing global movement of people using business as a force for good.
If B Corp is to business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to milk, then it’s only a matter of time before Nikola becomes a certified B Corp (we’re currently pending). The certification process begins with a thorough impact assessment of Nikola consisting of over 100 questions. The nonprofit B Lab then reviews the answers along with a year’s worth of data and documentation under their rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Score values are given to each answer; companies with a score of 80 or above are given B Corp certifications as well as a scorecard out of 200 possible points. Nikola Power aims to score as many points as possible.
We encourage all businesses to join the movement, to aspire to do no harm, to benefit all, and to understand that we’re interdependent—we’re responsible for each other as well as for future generations. Become a leader in your industry that redefines the definition of success as success for all. Instead of striving to be the “Best in the World”, be the “Best for the World.”
Some may assume that focusing on benefiting all shareholders happens at the expense of the business. They may be surprised by the following excerpt from the B Corp Handbook by Ryan Honeyman:
“The International Finance Corporation reported that the Dow Jones Sustainability Index performed an average of 36.1 percent better than traditional Dow Jones Index over a period of five years.”
Even a recent Harvard Business School study concluded that “high sustainability companies significantly outperform their counterparts over the long term, both in terms of stock market as well as accounting performance.”
Today, there are more than 2,100 Certified B Corps from 50 countries and over 130 industries collectively working toward one unifying goal. Nikola, with or without a B Corp certification, will always be working toward the goal of redefining success for businesses and for the planet — we hope you will be too.
